Greens In Focus: Augusta National Golf Club

When Rory McIlroy won the AT&T Pro Am at Pebble Beach earlier this year, he called it a “Cathedral of Golf.” If Pebble is a Cathedral, then Augusta National is the Vatican. Steeped in nearly a century of history and co-founded by the legendary Bobby Jones, Augusta is a place every golfer dreams of experiencing. But not just anyone gets in. The exclusivity isn’t limited to players—landing a coveted ticket to golf’s most prestigious major is its own challenge.

As I mentioned in my welcome blog, I’ve entered the Masters lottery for 13 years straight, only to be denied every time. At this point, the heartbreak is an annual tradition of its own. What makes it even crazier? If you do get lucky, the ticket price is no different from other majors, and the food prices are actually cheaper than most tournaments. No cell phones are allowed on any of the tournament days, but in today’s world of social media and constant connection to technology, this rule becomes a refreshing gift. It forces you to be present, to soak in the beauty of Augusta National without distractions. No screens, no notifications—just you, the course, and the game. It’s a rare and welcomed chance to truly unplug and experience golf in its purest form.

For lovers of the game, there’s nothing quite like Masters week. From the moment I hear Ray Charles’ Georgia on My Mind and see that iconic pan down Magnolia Lane in the promo, the chills set in. The fairways bordered by towering Georgia Pines and set against a backdrop of vibrant azaleas, create a stunning aerial view. Then there are the outfits, the Masters pools, and the irresistible itch to get out on the course. From the opening tee shot ceremony featuring the honorary starters and legends like Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Arnold Palmer and Tom Watson to the beloved Par 3 Contest, Augusta is a place where history and nostalgia collide.

The Masters is often considered the true start of the PGA season—after players battle through the California and Florida swings. Augusta is where legacies are made. A win here doesn’t just earn you a Green Jacket; it etches your name into golf history.

Addendum: I wrote the post above prior to the start of the Masters last week, but I would be remiss if I didn't bring it full circle and say - Rory, you did it. You're a Masters Champion. You've achieved the Career Grand Slam. No one has ever doubted that you are one of the greatest to play the game, but this win solidifies it. You've accomplished what so many haven't come remotely close to achieving, something only 5 men have done before you, including the man you grew up in Northern Ireland watching, admiring and idolizing- Tiger Woods. You've reached the mountain top.

The 89th edition of the Masters may be over, but the "Rors" will echo through the fairways of Augusta for generations to come.

What are they going to say now?
